Quotations to Live (Teach) By

The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.

Welcome and Instructions

Welcome to the Teaching Literature blog

This blog is dedicated to discussions of English 4800: Teaching Literature in Secondary Schools at Western Michigan University (Fall 2007). I will, however, continue updating this blog after the semester is complete.
Most of my posts will have to do with the following texts:
  • Appleman, Deborah. Critical Encounters in High School English: Teaching Literary Theory to Adolescents.
  • Carey-Webb, Allen. Literature and Lives: A Response-Based, Cultural Studies Approach to Teaching English.
  • Willhelm, Jeffrey. "You Gotta Be the Book:" Teaching Engaged and Reflective Reading with Adolescents.
If you not a student of this class, please feel free to read and comment. I would love your input.
If you are an ENGL 4800 student, instructions follow:
  1. If you have not done so already, create your own blog for this class. Blogger is our default site, but if you are familiar/comfortable with another blogging site, you may use a different one.
  2. Make each chapter discussion a separate post. Plan on writing three or more good paragraphs for each post.
  3. Please respond to at least two other posts per week.

I suggest adding a page element called "link lists" to keep track of each of your classmate's blogs. Another easy way to keep up to date is to subscribe to the RSS feed of each blog and then using an aggregator/reader such as Google Reader to read them without even logging in to your blog.
